How to Bid in Online Furniture Auctions: From First Bid to Pickup Day

Most guides to online auctions stop at the moment you win. In practice, that’s the halfway point. Between your first bid and the moment a dresser is strapped down in the back of your vehicle, there’s a sequence of small events — an outbid email, a soft-close extension, a charge to your card, an invoice, a phone call, a weekday appointment — and knowing what each one looks like ahead of time is the difference between a smooth first auction and a stressful one. This is the full timeline of how to bid in our online furniture auctions here in Sacramento, from the day you create your account to the afternoon you pull up to our warehouse on S Watt Ave.

Before the Auction: Setting Up

Day One: A Free Account and a Card on File

Your account at bid.rivercityfurnitureauction.com is free. You provide your name, contact details and a Visa, MasterCard or Discover card (American Express and checks aren’t accepted). The card sits unused until you win something; then it’s charged after the auction closes. Use an email address you check daily, because every important update in this timeline arrives by email.

Where the Inventory Comes From

Our lots come from manufacturers, overstock warehouses and liquidation sales. That’s why a single week’s catalog can hold a sofa, a cordless drill set, a stack of bedding, a run of brand-name clothing and a flat-screen TV — and why prices land up to 90% off retail. It’s also why the condition grades matter so much: the same catalog can hold brand-new boxed items and store returns side by side.

The Auction Week: Browsing and Bidding

Reading a Lot the Right Way

Open the current catalog on our online bidding site and click into a lot. You’ll see photos, a description and one of three condition grades: New, Like New, or Used/Store Return.

Here’s the part first-timers need to hear twice: about 98% of our photos are stock images, and we don’t hold previews at the warehouse. So the sequence is description first, grade second, photo third. The photo tells you what the product is; the description and grade tell you what’s actually sitting in our building. Check the dimensions against your space and your vehicle while you’re at it.

Placing Your First Bid

Enter the most you’re willing to pay. That’s your maximum, and from here the site works for you: it places the lowest bid needed to lead and, if someone else bids, automatically raises yours in increments up to — but never past — your ceiling. This is called proxy bidding, and it means you don’t have to watch the screen. Set your maximum with the 16% buyer’s premium and applicable California sales tax (currently 8.75% in Sacramento) already in mind; a $100 hammer price is $116 before tax.

”You’ve Been Outbid”

If another bidder goes past your maximum, an email tells you so. You can raise your maximum or let it go. Either is a fine choice — we run auctions every week in Sacramento, and comparable pieces come around regularly.

Closing Day: What the Soft Close Looks Like

Every lot shows a scheduled closing date and time. As that moment approaches, you’ll notice something that surprises many new bidders: when a bid comes in during the last moments, the clock extends. That’s the soft close. It gives every bidder a fair chance to respond to a late bid, and it keeps repeating until no new bids arrive. A lot that “should have” closed at the top of the hour may run on a few minutes more. If you’ve set your true maximum, you don’t need to do anything; if you’re watching a favorite, this is when you’d decide whether to raise once.

Then the lot closes. If your bid is the highest, you’ve won.

After the Close: Payment and Invoice

Two things happen without any action on your part. The card on file is charged for your winning bid plus the premium and tax, and an invoice is emailed to you. Read it the day it arrives. It confirms what you won and what you paid, and it starts the clock on pickup.

The 14-Day Pickup Window

From the auction, you have 14 days to collect your items from our warehouse. After day 14, storage is charged at $10 per item per day. That fee adds up quickly on a multi-lot invoice, so book your pickup appointment as soon as the invoice lands rather than waiting for a free weekend — especially since pickups happen on weekdays only.

Pickup Day in Sacramento

Booking an Appointment

All pickups are by appointment at 5400 S Watt Ave, Sacramento, CA 95826, Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Call (916) 383-2121 to schedule a time. We’re in south Sacramento, a short drive from Elk Grove, Rancho Cordova and Folsom. Directions and details are on our Sacramento location page.

What to Bring

  • Your invoice email. On your phone is fine; it matches you to your lots quickly.
  • A vehicle that fits the item. Compare the dimensions in the listing to your cargo space before you leave home. A sectional or a dining table may need a truck or a trailer.
  • Tie-downs, blankets and a helper. Larger pieces are a two-person lift. Bring straps to secure the load and blankets to protect finishes on the drive home.
  • Weekday availability. Appointments run Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM only.

At the Warehouse

Arrive at your appointment time and check each item against the description and condition grade on your invoice before you load it. Remember that only items graded New can be returned — within 7 days and in the original box. Items graded Like New or Used/Store Return are sold as graded, so the description you read before bidding is the standard they’re held to.

  6. After the close: your card is charged and your invoice arrives by email.

Frequently Asked “What If” Questions

What if I win several lots in the same auction? Plan one appointment for all of them, and make sure your vehicle can handle the full load.

What if I can’t make it within 14 days? Storage begins at $10 per item per day after the window closes, so if a trip to Sacramento within two weeks isn’t realistic, it’s better to sit out that auction.

What if something is different from the description? Items graded New can be returned within 7 days in the original box. For anything else, reach out — our FAQ covers the policies, and our contact page is the fastest way to get a question to the team.
