How to Bid in Online Furniture Auctions: Step-by-Step for Beginners
By the River City Furniture Auction team
If you’ve never bid in an online auction before, the whole thing can look more complicated than it is. Lot numbers, maximum bids, closing times, buyer’s premiums — it sounds like a lot to learn just to save money on a sofa. The good news is that bidding in our weekly online furniture auctions here in Sacramento comes down to a handful of simple steps, and once you’ve done it once, you’ll never think twice about it again. This guide walks a complete beginner through every one of those steps: creating a free account on our online bidding site, reading a listing the right way, placing your first bid, and collecting your items at our warehouse on S Watt Ave.
Why Bid in Online Furniture Auctions at All?
Retail furniture pricing carries a lot of overhead: showroom rent, sales commissions, advertising and a long distribution chain. An online auction strips most of that away. At River City Furniture Auction, our inventory comes from manufacturers, overstock warehouses and liquidation sales, and every week we list furniture, clothing, tools, decor, bedding and electronics at prices that regularly land up to 90% off retail.
Because the final price is set by the bidders rather than a price tag, you pay what the item is actually worth to the people competing for it — and in a timed online auction, the people competing are simply other Sacramento-area shoppers with a free account and a few minutes to spare.
Step 1: Create Your Free Account
Everything starts at bid.rivercityfurnitureauction.com, our online bidding site. Registering is free and takes a few minutes: you enter your name, contact information and a password.
You’ll also keep a payment card on file. We accept Visa, MasterCard and Discover (not American Express, and no checks). The card isn’t charged when you register or when you bid — it’s charged only after an auction closes and you’ve won something. It simply means every bid placed on the site is backed by a real buyer, which keeps the auction fair for everyone.
Use an Email Address You Actually Read
This matters more than it sounds. Outbid notices and your invoice arrive by email. If those messages land in an inbox you check once a month, you’ll miss the chance to raise a bid and, worse, you may not realize you’ve won until your pickup window is already ticking down.
Step 2: Browse the Weekly Catalog
Once you’re logged in, open the current auction and start scrolling. A new auction is listed every week, so there’s always a fresh catalog to work through. Each lot has photos, a written description and a condition grade.
Read the Description Before You Trust the Photo
Here’s something first-time bidders don’t expect: about 98% of the photos in our listings are stock images supplied by the manufacturer, not pictures of the exact item in the warehouse. The photo tells you what the product is; the description and the condition grade tell you what you’re actually bidding on. We don’t hold previews at the warehouse, so those two lines of text are your inspection. Read them every time.
Know the Three Condition Grades
Every lot is graded one of three ways:
- New — unused.
- Like New — not factory-fresh, but in excellent condition.
- Used/Store Return — has been used or returned to a retailer; read the description for specifics.
The grade also matters after you win. Returns are accepted only on items graded New, within 7 days, and in the original box. Everything graded Like New or Used/Store Return is final sale, so factor that into your maximum bid.
Check the Measurements
Furniture that’s six inches too wide for your hallway isn’t a bargain at any price. Pull out a tape measure before you bid, compare it to the dimensions in the description, and think about how you’ll get the piece home — we’re pickup only, so it needs to fit in your vehicle or a friend’s truck.
Step 3: Place Your First Bid
Find a lot you like and enter the most you’d be willing to pay for it. That number is your maximum bid, and it’s the only number you need to think about.
How Proxy Bidding Works
You don’t have to sit there raising your bid by hand. Our bidding site bids on your behalf, one increment at a time, only as high as it needs to go to keep you in the lead — and never past your maximum. If nobody else bids, you win at the lowest amount the lot reached, not at your maximum. If someone does outbid you, you get an email, and you can decide whether to come back and raise your number.
Budget for the Buyer’s Premium and Tax
Your bid isn’t the whole price. A 16% buyer’s premium is added to every winning bid, plus applicable California sales tax (currently 8.75% in Sacramento). So if you win a lot at $100, the premium brings it to $116 before tax. Work backward from what you want to spend in total, and set your maximum bid accordingly.
Step 4: Watch the Closing Time (and the Soft Close)
Every lot closes on a scheduled end date and time, listed right on the lot. There’s no “buy it now” — you wait for the clock.
The one wrinkle beginners should know about is the soft close. If a bid comes in during the final moments before a lot closes, the closing time is extended so other bidders have a chance to respond. That means a lot showing a few seconds left might stay open a little longer than you expect. The upside is that nobody can “snipe” an item away from you with a last-second bid you had no chance to answer. Place your true maximum early and the soft close works in your favor.
Step 5: Win, Pay and Pick Up in Sacramento
When the auction closes and your bid is the highest, two things happen automatically: the card on file is charged for the winning bid plus the premium and tax, and an invoice is emailed to you. Keep that email — it’s your receipt and your pickup paperwork.
Pickup Is by Appointment, Monday Through Friday
River City Furniture Auction is a local-pickup business. Every item is collected in person from our warehouse at 5400 S Watt Ave, Sacramento, CA 95826. Pickups are by appointment only, Monday through Friday between 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM. Call us at (916) 383-2121 to book a time, and bring help if you’ve won something heavy — a sectional or a bedroom set is a two-person job.
Mind the 14-Day Window
You have 14 days after the auction to pick up your items. After that, storage is charged at $10 per item per day, which turns a great deal into a mediocre one fast. If you can’t make it to S Watt Ave within two weeks of the closing date, it’s better not to bid. Our Sacramento location page has directions and the details you need to plan your visit.
A Few Beginner Habits That Pay Off
- Decide your maximum before you bid, not during. Auction adrenaline is real. Pick the number while you’re calm and let the site do the rest.
- Bid on several lots, not just one. Weekly catalogs often include comparable pieces. Spreading your bids raises your odds of taking something home.
- Reread the condition grade before you confirm. A Used/Store Return dresser at a low price is a fine deal — as long as you knew that’s what you were buying.
- Ask before the auction closes. If a description leaves you unsure about dimensions, piece count or condition, reach out through our contact page. We’d rather answer up front than surprise you at pickup.
Ready to Place Your First Bid?
That’s the whole process: free account, read the listing, set a maximum, let the site bid for you, and pick up at our warehouse within 14 days. Sacramento-area shoppers do it every week, and you can too. Browse this week’s current auctions on our online bidding site, pick one lot that catches your eye, and place a bid you’d be happy to win. The first one is the hardest; after that, you’ll wonder why you ever paid retail.
